Time flies when you are having fun. Has it been 2 years already? Yes, it is that time of year where you need to renew your FAA Part 107 License. This will be much easier the second time around than it was 2 years ago when you first started this venture. Read on to take your online FAA Part 107 license renewal.

Does My Part 107 License Expire

Every FAA-issued license or certificate does not expire. Once a person receives their certificate, the certificate is always held by that person unless your privileges are revoked. The FAA requires all certificate holding persons to go through recurrent training. This recurrent training allows a person to keep up their knowledge while updating them on some rules that might not have been made aware of throughout the years.

My grandfater had his private pilots license for over 50 years and carried this in his wallet till the day he passed away. He was always a pilot, but discontinued any recurrent training later in his life. Certainly I will probably do the same thing as I get older.

When Must I Renew My Part 107 License

The FAA Part 107 License is valid until the end of the month 2 years later. If you were to take your online FAA Part 107 license renewal on the 12th of October, you will have to retake your recurrent exam by the end of October 2 years from then.

Forgot to Renew Your Part 107 Online

If for some reason, you forgot to renew your FAA part 107 license online, do not panic. Once the end of the month passes, you are no longer allowed to exercise your Part 107 privileges. All that needs to happen is to take your online FAA Part 107 license renewal exam. Once you have passed, you can now exercise your privileges again.

Who is Eligible for the Online FAA Part 107 License Renewal?

  • Current Part 61 pilot certificates (including sport pilot, recreational pilot, private pilot, commercial pilot, and air transport pilot certificates)
  • Current Part 135 Pilots with an Annual/Bi-annual Review
  • Current Part 91 Pilots with an Annual/Bi-annual Review
  • Must be 16 years of age
  • Read, Speak, and understand English

Who is NOT Eligible for the Online FAA Part 107 License Renewal?

The below persons are not eligible for the online FAA Part 107 Renewal but still may use this as a study guide.

  • Student Pilots
  • Pilots without an Annual/Biannual
  • Persons 15 and Under

If you are not eligible to renew your FAA Part 107 License online, you can use this information as a study guide in the meantime. To take the Part 107 Remote Pilot recurrent exam, you must go to a recurrent FAA Unmanned Aircraft General (UGR) Knowledge Test at a Knowledge Testing Center (KTC)

Time to Pass the Online FAA Part 107 License Renewal

From start to finish, this should take you about 2 hours. The test is not timed, you can come back and take breaks as often as you like. Do not close the window that you are working with. Personally, I had issues with it saving my progress as I progressed. Normally I use Chrome, but I found Microsoft Edge gave me less of an issue with this.

The Correct Part 107 FAA sUAS Recurrent Course

Click on the above heading to go straight to the FAA sUAS Recurrent Course. Make sure you login in the upper right corner. If you do not login, you will only be practicing and not receiving ANY credit, AT ALL!

Introduction

As with every course, you will start out with a summary of what you are about to be taught and what to expect. Pay particular attention to where it says the flash section has not been updated to the latest rules, yet the exam has been! This means there is incorrect information that would later be marked wrong when the time comes during the exam. At the time of writing, the study portion was rewritten 6 months ago.

Training Modules and Lessons

There are three modules consisting of multiple lessons each.

Each training lesson starts off with a short (less than 1 minute) video followed by 12-18 reading slides full of information. Read thoroughly for any information you could have missed or forgotten over the past 2 years.

Between modules, expect to see a few review questions to help you see if you are on track or not.

Exam

My exam consisted of 29 questions with 3 possible answers each. All were straight forward without any trick questions. Once again, this is not timed, but if you quit out of the exam it will make you start again. Each question even has referances if you wanted to look each answer up.

Congratulations! You Passed!

If you are a current Part 61 pilot certificate holder, you only need to successfully complete the exam and print the certificate at the end. There are two pages to the PDF. Page one is the big “frame it and hang it” on your wall certificate. Page two is a smaller credit card-sized cut-out that you can laminate and keep with you in your wallet. Both of these certificates are proof you are current and will need to be made available if requested by the Administrator.

Print It, Save It, eMail It!

There are multiple ways they can get this to you. Personally, I like to immediately print it, have it emailed to me, and also have it uploaded to Google Drive for safekeeping.

Reprint Certificate From FAASafety.gov

TIf at some point, you lose your completion certificate, all is not lost! The FAA Safety website will save your online FAA Part 107 Certificates for you. Simply log in, under your login name on the right side should list ‘Common Tasks’ and then “Printing Certificates.” Once there you can view all courses completed, in progress, and available to you. Once the correct course is found, it should have a “Print Certificate” link.

Helpful Tips

Click periodically the upper right-hand corner labeled “Lessons” while completing your training. This will allow you to ensure you are getting successful completions as you go along by checking the progress. Their exams, in my experience, have not always been so accurate at tracking progress. This is frustrating as it makes you retake the lesson. As I mentioned before, I have had better results using Microsoft Edge compared to Chrome.

The good news, the lessons do not seem to be timed. If you are confident in your knowledge, you should be able to breeze through these steps in record time and back to flying!
