Do I Need To Register UAV or Drone?

Most small drones under 55 lbs, or about 25 kg, do NOT require a license, but the FAA does require you register anything over .55 pounds, or approximately 25 grams.  Once you go over that limit, legally you must register UAV and be flown under a strict set of rules governed by the FAA.  They are the same authority figures that govern over aircraft and pilot certificates for the real deal.  Reading up on such rules and regulations are always recommended to make sure you are abiding by what is required.  In the event your UAV or drone weights more than 55 lbs, you must use a paper application that can also be found on The FAA Drone Zone Website Here after you register.

Who Can Register?

Any US citizen 13 years of age or older is able to register UAV.  This person will need a valid email address, a credit or debit card to pay a minimal fee for the registration process, and a current residential address.  If you are not over 13, you must have somebody over the age of 13 registers it for you.

Am I a Modeler or Part 107?

FAA Part 107 is a combined set of rules that allows a person to fly a UAV for hire.  Most people will not fall under this category and will be considered a Modeler which cannot accept any compensation for UAV related jobs, such as selling photography.

Rumor has it that registration will become mandatory. If you wait too long, you might be required to pass an online test before you can obtain one. Smart money says register now before they change it!
