Fat Shark 101 FPV Drone Racing Kit

The Fat Shark 101 Drone Racing Kit has arrived at my house and is a family favorite to play with.  I tend to let the kids play with my other drones without much supervision, but this one is mine!  I share occasionally, but this one is too much fun to completely share.  When the wife isn’t home of course!

Fat Shark is a well known FPV (First Person View) Goggles company. Fat Shark has been around since 2007 and has quickly taken over the market with 85% of professional pilots using their goggles.

The Fat Shark 101 Racing Kit comes with everything you need to start learning to not only fly, but also race drones. Once you open the box, everything is tucked neatly away and the original box can be used for storage for as long as you own the drone.

RTFM!

The first step of any new toy of this nature needs to be Read the Freakin Manual! The manual supplied with this setup is quite in-depth and will get you flying in no time. Get a jump on it Here from Fat Shark themselves in pdf form. The Fat Shark 101 Quick Start Guide gives you plenty of tips and instructions on how to get started quickly flying.

Charge Up and Install Batteries

It is honestly THAT simple. If you have flown a drone before, or even some type of RC aircraft, you can jump straight in as the controls are standard. Unlike DJI, the throttle does not return to center and it will not hold your altitude for you. There is not any GPS hover modes and will drift with any wind. The ‘Flight Mode’ is changed by moving the upper left silver switch. There are 3 available modes. The easiest being all the way up, or Flight Mode 1. In this mode, the drone will level off when you release the controls, slowing the forward motion, but not stopping it.

Drone Racing League Simulator

Included with all of this is a download code for Steam. Steam allows you to play any purchased games on any computer you log in to. They have been around for as long as I can remember. The simulator is great. Even without a top-notch computer, this program still runs great. DRL Simulator will teach you everything you need to know without endangering or damaging your drone. Once you have everything set up, you can go into training and start from scratch or pickup where you feel comfortable learning.

BetaFlight Configurator

There are multiple flight modes available and are adjustable through a USB interface to program. Download the latest version from GitHub Here. By using the included MicroUSB cable, connect to your ‘Shark’ drone via the plug located on top of the drone behind the top fin. After some drivers are installed, you should see some flashing lights letting you know everything is ready to be started. Open up your installed BetaFlight Configurator and start poking around. Do be careful, if you aren’t sure what you are doing, do not change anything!

Recon FPV Goggles

The Recon FPV Goggles are included in this set. They aren’t top of the line but will give you a good start on learning. You can also use them on other drones and systems too. The basic antenna that is included works ok. Meaning you will want to upgrade that later to a better one. Start slow on FPV as it will give you a headache until you get used to it. The Fat Shark 101 Quick Start Guide gives you plenty of tips and instructions on how to get started with FPV also. See more and how this has started my new obsession here!

Conclusion:

The Fat Shark 101 FPV Drone Racing Kit has been an amazing addition to my collection.  The FPV Recon Goggles have been something to get used to, but am catching on quickly and having fun.  The kids love to use the goggles while I zip around the house barely missing objects. Granted, this is not a full blown race setup, but it will get you started and can be adapted to future setups. The Fat Shark 101 is great for anyone looking or wanting to their feet wet with FPV or even just drones in general! In other words, what are you waiting for?
