Why Use Rechargeable Batteries

A majority of rechargeable batteries come in all popular sizes, shapes, and voltages. Many batteries you already own are rechargeable and most people never think about it. Two examples would be your laptop and cellphone. Where would we be if you had to replace those batteries on a weekly or even daily basis?

Cost

At first, you might be lead to believe that rechargeables are more expensive. But most quality batteries sell for about $1 apiece. A standard pack of 8 batteries would be $8 plus tax. Rechargeables tend to start at about $2.50 each, costing a full pack at $20. To regain your money you would only need to recharge each battery 2.5 times. Now multiply those savings by hundreds or even thousands of recharges and it totally makes sense.

Saves Space

Not having to store hundreds of spare batteries in your cabinets can save you valuable space in your house. You would only need to keep an extra few of each common type of battery charged for when a pair would need to be recharged.

Less Waste

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates each year Americans throw away more than three billion batteries, which is considered hazardous waste. When each battery can be recharged hundreds of times you are obviously throwing away less waste.

Where to Use Rechargeable Batteries

The best place to use rechargeable batteries is in highly used appliances. The more often you can charge them, the higher return you will get. Items that you use daily like tv remotes, toys, and computer peripherals are perfect examples. If you can think of an item that you have recently changed batteries in, that’s probably where they should be used.

Which Batteries to Replace

Before you run out and purchase all rechargeable batteries, you should consider which ones make sense to replace. Single-use batteries are better suited for low-drain or seldom-used applications. Batteries that need to be changed yearly or so could also take many years to make your investment back on. The clock on your wall, smoke detectors, and your LED flashlight are all great examples of this. When it takes 2.5 charges to recoup your cost, it would be quite sometime before you see a return.

Conclusion

While each person must choose for themselves whether or not rechargeables are for them or not, there is always a possibility it could work for you. In my household, I cannot keep spare batteries around and feel like these are constantly being purchased. A good system might be needed to ensure the kids do not toss out the wrong batteries! If you need this for constant traveling, consider a separate charger to keep in your travel bag.

Pros:

  • Saves money over long-term
  • Saves storage space
  • Less waste sent to landfills

Cons:

  • Must have spares for when they need recharging
  • For traveling, a full-sized charger is larger than preferred
  • Cost is more expensive per battery
  • Must charge 2 same-sized batteries at once

Update: 1 Year Later

As of a year and a half later, I have been swapping out and charging almost weekly the same 2 AAA batteries in my Bose QC25 headset. Typically I use this on an every other day basis for hours on end at work and also in personal times.

So far, the rechargeable batteries have not shown much deterioration in charging performance. They are still as reliable today as the day I received them. Although I have not been tracking charging cycles, you need to charge two batteries at the same time. If I were to estimate the approximate cycles, I would guess I have charged them about once every 10 days. According to Bose.com, the headsets should last for about 35 hours of use, which sounds about right. Based on those numbers I have charged them both about 50 times each and are still going strong. That should be about $250 worth of savings!

Now I need to use that savings to expand to other useful devices in my house. Any tips to keep the kids from throwing them away??
