Part 107.9 Accident Reporting

The remote pilot in command must report any sUAS accident to the FAA no later than 10 days after a Part 107 operation.  Incident and accident reporting are required under the following conditions:

  • Serious injury to any person or any loss of consciousness; or
  • Damage to any property, other than the small unmanned aircraft, unless one of the following conditions is satisfied:
    1. The cost of repair (including materials and labor) does not exceed $500; or
    2. The fair market value of the property does not exceed $500 in the event of total loss.

Any accident that requires reporting, must include the following information to be turned in with your report to the FAA:

  1. Remote PIC’s name and contact information
  2. Remote PIC’s FAA airman certificate number
  3. UAV Registration number issued to the aircraft, if required (FAA registration number)
  4. Location of the accident
  5. Date of the accident
  6. Time of the accident
  7. Person(s) injured and extent of an injury, if any or known
  8. Property damaged and extent of damage, if any or known
  9. Description of what happened

Click Here For Advisory Circular AC 107-2.  Section 4.5 contains the latest information on accident reporting and also on a lot of other UAV regulations.

In addition to the above information, I like to add a few extras to my Accident Cheatsheet.

  • Names and phone numbers of witnesses
  • Names and phone numbers of those affected
  • Any Visual Observers present
  • Extra crew members that were present
  • Significant weather
  • Any interference noted
  • A nice big space for notes

DroneZone Accident Reporting

You can report any accident online after you login to FAA’s Drone Zone Here.  The FAA has made this an extremely easy process to submit.  Once you are under your Part 107 Dashboard, at the bottom, you can review previous accident reports and also submit a new one.  The information requested in itself is very basic.

Step One

Type in your pilot information, operation details, and a short description at the bottom.  If you were paying attention from before, you can use your Incident Reporting Cheatsheet!  Click submit to bring you to step two.

Step Two

Page two simply confirms the accident reporting information you have entered.  If this is all correct, you may press “Submit” to send your report to the powers that be.

Step Three

This is your accident reporting confirmation number.  It is my recommendation to print this.  Save for future reference with any conversations that may or may not happen in your future.  Maybe place it in your Secret Mission Critical Binder!
